Eagles Bid Farewell to Linebacker Devin White: A New Chapter Awaits

The Philadelphia Eagles have officially parted ways with linebacker Devin White, as announced on Tuesday.

Reports from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler indicate that the Eagles had explored trade options for White during the preseason but ultimately failed to secure a deal. According to ESPN’s Tim McManus, White and the Eagles reached an agreement to release him now instead of waiting until the trade deadline, which would have subjected him to waivers.

White, a former Pro Bowler, signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Eagles in March. However, he never took the field for the team before his release.

The linebacker spent the first five seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and chose to join the Eagles this offseason, seeking a fresh start after a disappointing 2023 campaign.

“I took less because I felt it was a better situation,” White remarked during an appearance on the Pivot podcast in August, as relayed by Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith. “That shows it’s not about the money. It’s never been about the money. It’s about being in the right situation, the right environment, and being able to have fun.”

In his Pro Bowl season in 2021, White amassed 128 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. He posted comparable statistics in 2022 but saw a significant decline in performance in 2023, recording just 83 tackles and 2.5 sacks over 14 games. He also mentioned during his podcast appearance that he felt pressured to play through injuries in his final season with the Buccaneers.

Now that he has been released by the Eagles, Devin White is on the lookout for an opportunity with another team. While he did not make an impact in Philadelphia’s lineup, many franchises could benefit from acquiring a player of his caliber, and he will be eager to find a new home.
